I would like a new digital camera, price range $500-$700. Any recommendations? For mainly children shots and special occasions. Thanks.

You can pick up a Canon 550D DSLR with twin lens kit for that price if you look around.

    I love mine.

I just bought a Nikon L810. It's a good camera - not a DSLR tho. I paid just over $250 for the camera, bag & 16gb memory card.

I think Sony do great cameras. Do you know how to use an slr? Or are you going to learn how to shoot it on anything other than auto? If not, I wouldn't bother with a full slr. The Sony nex is great, although may be a little out of your price range. It has interchangeable lenses plus video function and even though I am a keen amateur photographer and know how to use an slr, I use my Sony lots just cos it's more compact than my D4 Nikon

Thanks. My brother said the same if just using auto. He suggested
    Nikon 1.
Would a new non-slr still produce good pics?

I would go with sony. I still have an old 3 megapixel one that is going strong. I bought a newer one a couple of years ago and have had no problems with it.
As for nikon, i had one in between sony's and it died and was fixed under warranty. Then once warranty was up it died again. It also wasn't as user friendly as the sony. Overall was a waste of the $ 600 i paid for it.

I just bought a nikon d5100 and i love it!

Easy to use and great photos in auto mode. Groupon have an online photography course for $69 at the moment so I've bought that to learn how to use it properly
