    Default Advice on toddlers please

Since my 2 and 3 yr old were smaller their "grandmother" ("" because I'm using this lightly lately she isn't around) had encouraged behind my back that it's ok to pick things up of the ground and eat it (food) she knew I hated it I told her no but it fell on deaf ears. Now my 2 and 3 yr old are forever putting EVERYTHING in their mouths, from plants, to shampoo and my dd puts dirt in hers. How do I get them to stop? Iv tried telling them it's yuck an they will get sick, iv tried tapping their hands, iv even I'm ashamed to say yelled because they won't listen to me. It's a filthy habit and I thought at least my 3 yr old would of stopped by now. I need help

Are you sure we don't have the same mother? LOL. I used to tell my mother not to do certain things with my DD and she'd go and do it anyway. Used to drive me bananas.

I think maybe try alternatives? e.g. you see them pick up some dirt and put it in their mouth "That's yucky how about we have a nice banana, cheese stick, etc instead". Children seem to like doing these things so I don't really know what else you can do but whatever it is be firm. I'd probably give my DD a warning and than she'd be sent to the corner but that's what we do for consequences in our house.
