Default Contents Insurance, how much cover?

DH and I are about to renew our house and contents. He thinks $50,000 for contents in the home and $20,000 for contents in the shed. Sounds about right, hey? (lol!)

I'm interested in how much cover others have.

I was thinking $100,000 for home contents plus whatever **** he wants covered in the shed.

Ours is covered for $85000 + my engagement ring. But we don't have any floor coverings or anything, we have timber floors.

You need to look at how much would it cost to go to the shops and buy everything- including linen, kitchen ware, toys, electricals, gardening stuff, clothes etc etc. Most people think of the big stuff but open your linen cupboard and work out how much for all new sheets, towels, doonas etc..... How much just to replace all those little utensil things in the kitchen- cause if your house burns to the ground (knock on wood it never happens) you will need to replace everything and it's amazing how much stuff adds up. I used to work in insurance and for our 4 bedroom house we have 120k in contents (we don't own a plasma/home theatre/expensive anything really). All the little stuff adds up.

Alot of the insurance pages have calculators, you go through like a spreadsheet, they are very helpful. There are lots of things you forget.

I think ours are insured for $50 or $60k, but we don't have expensive appliances or furniture.

Ours is for $120k plus portable goods like jewelry and my leather saddle. Just as a note, my dads house burnt down about 15 months ago and his contents cover is what his temp accommodation came out of so might be worth checking your policy to see if there is anything like this and up cover accordingly

We have ours insured for $100k. It is with Suncorp. Cover is called Platinum Cover. The entire $100k is covered in house & portable. Individual items do not need to be listed unless they are valued over $5k per item which is a really convenient feature.

We have $100K for 2 adults and 2 kids. Imagine your house burns down and everything you own goes with it. Replacing everything down to that last pair of undies adds up. Our most expensive things would be tv fridge washing machine iPad etc.
