Dh turns 30 in a few weeks, a few family and friends are going on a weekend away for it which he knows about. Has anyone got any ideas how to make it more special? gift ideas? surprises while we are there? things i could do/make etc? he's had a really tough year and i want him to feel really special but i don't have a big budget

Is he sentimental? A poem or song written by you and performed by kids / nieces / nephews would make it a nice occasion.

What about getting a heap of little gifts and asking all his family and friends to randomly hand him one throughout the weekend? That would make it really special without breaking the bank. You could do hand made things from the kids mixed with bought things like fishing lures, or whatever he's into

My DH turned 30 last year, but I spent a bit of money on him. I surprised him with a fancy hotel room in the CBD and a harbour cruise dinner. The cheapest part was asking his parents to come up from Wagga for the weekend, and we didn't tell him.
What sort of weekend have you got planned for him? Does he know exactly who is coming, or could you surprise him with a special guest? Could you get a copy of a newspaper from the day he was born and frame it? Do you have kids yet - you could get baby photos of the whole family and put them in a frame together.
