Gampa I am the same as you I feel i should work until i cant anymore. I have a love/hate relationship with my work, but i think without it i get pretty bored and I want to earn as much money as I can before going on leave.

My work is making us take off from the 24th Dec to the 11th of Jan, I am then planning to come back to work and then finish at the end of the first week of Feb. But of course it depends on how I am feeling. Jan is a pretty dead time at work so it will give me time to get everything together for the person who takes on my job whilst I am away.S

So basically i would like 2-3 weeks off before bub is born just to make sure everything is ready...

Gampa - I am finishing at 36 weeks. I only just have enough hol pay to last from then until due date (hope I don't go late). Thinking I might try and hit up my OB for a dr cert to finish 2 weeks earlier and take sick leave though. Mostly because xmas is in the middle and I want some time to get my house organised, and I am really not a huge fan of my job. Renos will be continuing right up until bubs is born I suspect.
Do you mind if I ask why you don't get any PPL from govt?? I didn't realise it was means tested or anything? (could just be my ignorance though)

For those of you about to start mat leave can I ask how many weeks you are?

With my first I worked right up until I was in labour! Finished my clinic and then went straight to birth suite after a days work! I was 38 plus 4 days. Baby came early despite been a primip.

This time it's number two and I'm much bigger in size compared to first bub and wondering when people were stopping? I personally couldn't justify going off before 36 weeks as I'd feel too quilty not earning money ( as I don't get mat leave pay from govt or from work). Also I'm not sure what I'd do with myself! I love working although it is hard this time round with number two. With number one you can rest whenever you want sleep as long as you want but with number two you still have to look after number one so resting and sleeping aren't options. So just wanted to know when most people start their mat leave and why? I'm thinking this time I may have to stop at Xmas time ( 35 weeks) due to size alone. I'm nor mally slim 60 kg but now there's a huge bump and people are asking me if I'm due next month already!!!cthey say you are bigger second time round and I think thats possibly true. So I'd love to knownwhen mot stop work and appreciate an opinion .

    Cheers everyone xx
Hey Gampa - My last day at work will be 14th December and I will be 30 weeks + 3 days. Reason being I wanted to have a long Christmas break, my grandparents are getting old and will be over here for a few weeks from NZ plus I thought I would enjoy a few weeks of summer to myself before my life changes....

There is a girl I work with who is older than me (38) and she is finishing up at 30 weeks because she just wants to give herself a break.

Bear in mind though that I do get mat leave / govt leave....sorry I'm not too helpful!!

Yeah I was getting that and asked our midwife about it on friday. She said it was normal and just alot of stretching going on. Mine stopped a day or so ago, but she said it isn't uncommon to get it from time to time.

Greb i cant speak for Gampa, but it is means tested at $150,000 for an individual. So if you earn over $150k then you are not entitled. But Gampa could have other reasons she doesnt receive it?

Anyone going to take up that 2 week pay for dads?

I dont have any annual leave so when I finish i am on Mat leave....or unpaid leave until bubs is born, not sure how it works? I am in the process of fillnig out the gov forms now and i am going to fo into centrelink to submit them to make sure i have done it all correctly!

    Hey Gampa,

I'm the slacker of the bunch, or maybe the lucky one, not sure, though will definitely will be the bored one. I am a mobile Dog Groomer so on the road driving every day, standing, bending over a tub to wash them and then doing all those fancy cuts on all kind of breeds. It is too hot in my trailer at the moment and it will only get worse, so we decided that I would finish this week. I have massive guilt issues about it as I work for myself, so my income pretty much stops this week.

Been thinking I might set up an online ebay story and import some wall stickers from China to help out, but that is still being discussed at the moment.

However we are lucky in a sense as my DH runs his family company and I am going on the books for a couple of months so we can get the mat leave from the govt. Will be doing some work from home for a little while, though i don't expect it to be too much, It will be more just helping when needed. Going to be very very bored I reckon.

The baby bonus and mat leave from govt is means tested. I am self employed so don't get any mat leave. I do work within the health system but they don't pay us mat leave anyway! My rents starting 1st nov. won't be finished til may! But babies don't take up much space. Just noise that worries me.

Are you able to get the baby bonus then if you can't get the govt mat leave? I'm sure you know but self emp can get the govt mat leave, I don't know much about it and it is very much a learning curve.
