Default Trifle? how do you make yours?

Do people use runny custard or thick custard? So when you serve it does it all run, or does it stay semi solid?

I've always done it semi solid (as that's how my mum did it) but mil does it runny!

I make my own custard with eggs, cream, etc so it does come out pretty thick. I find that with all the fruit and stuff I add in that I'd the custard was runny it would all just fall apart.
