Default Ipod or Tablet or phone??

We want to get my 8 year old a phone/ipod type device.

There are a few reasons...mainly cause he is going on a holiday with his bio dad (first time more than over night) and is freaking a little...and I want to use it to help him stay in touch. I think it will also help him stay in touch with his bio dad as he only sees him fortnightly and sometimes it ends up monthly.

I want to get Heytell, viber, Instant messaging, latitude and a way of sharing pictures daily.

I want him to be able to take pictures.

He likes to listen to music at night when he goes to sleep.

He does sometimes use my galaxy tab to play games on.

I want it to be reasonable light and small so he can carry with him (or his dad/I can carry for him).

I want to be able to lock it down so he can only have limited internet access (no facebook etc).

Which is going to be best?

Also, is there a way to give him "gift cards" of credit that he can use on buying games from the game shop and buying things within games (i don't want to link my credit card to it).

I would get an iPod touch for him. You can get iTunes cards to buy games and in game purchases. With the internet, you have to connect to wifi to access. You can get a Skype app to keep in contact and they are very light and portable. If you wanted bigger option, iPads are also awesome. My son has one and it's incredible how many free apps they have.

This. You can also use i messaging through itunes. However it needs to be where there is wifi to use the internet on it, as it doesn't have 3G. If you want him to be able to use the internet/skype anywhere, you would need to buy him an ipad, which might be better if he wants to read books, play games etc.

In terms of locking down the internet, you might be best with an ipad so that you can use net nanny or a computer program that stops certain pages from loading.

No, I don't think ipods have 3g. An ipad isn't that big. It is pretty transportable? Maybe an iphone is best then?

For an 8 year old though, they might have some use with an ipad with school, I know a lot of schools use ipads now so if I had an 8yo id get that, as it would be getting the most use out of it

Ok no you can't. I thought you could.
I'd go with an iPhone or iPad.

    i hate these decisions..

DH and I both have Androids...maybe i should upgrade and give him my tablet.

Not sure ex would carry the tablet though? smaller than an ipad but bigger than a phone?

Hi Melody Pond! Do you live near an Apple store? I'd go in for a chat and see what they say - staff are usually helpful
