Default Toddler with bad cough - help me help her sleep!

My 23mth old DD has had a cough for almost 2 mths. Every couple weeks I took her to our regular GP but got told to wait it out. After it seemed to worsen yesterday, followed by an almost 39deg fever overnight, I took her to a diff GP today who checked her out, said she has an ear infection which was causing the fever, but there were no signs of asthma or bronchitis, and it was just a cough. We got some antibiotics but mainly for her ear infection.

Anyway to the point, she's coughing so badly that she can't sleep! Every few minutes she starts coughing and hacking, and it causes her to wake up and cry. She had two pretty bad coughing fits that made her vomit. I've got the Vicks vaporizer going in the bedroom, panadol for the fever, Vicks baby balsam on her chest and back, Vicks on her pillow, she's elevated with pillows to help with her breathing.. But my poor baby is still coughing like crazy and unable to sleep for longer than 10mins at a time! Anything else I could be doing to help her?

It's awful to hear them cough like that
If it makes you feel any better my DD has recently had an ear infection where the symptoms were a hacking cough. She has been on anti-biotics for a few days and the cough has virtually gone so fingers crossed it will do the same for your little one.
It sounds like you're doing everything you can to help her. I popped her into my bed when she was struggling to sleep (she's a very clingy toddler) so I could prop her up even more and she would be comforted in mummy arms but I'm very used to sleeping with her in my bed.

Bexter- thanks, will try some Vicks on her feet now

Bec- hopefully its due to the ear infection! I didn't know coughs could be a symptom of ear infections! If she doesn't settle soon, she's coming into bed with me so I can keep her propped up and soothe her when needed. It's just hard coz I'm in my third tri and belly is huge, and DD is a kicker in her sleep!

Bumblebee - yes I have a vaporizer. It's got a Vicks solution in it and I have it going all night..

I had a cough for weeks that wouldn't let up ... and was told to disolve paracetemol and codeine in hot water and drink that. It tasted awful, but it worked. The first dose settled it down considerably, but after four hours I started coughing again so had a second dose. The following morning, I went to have a third dose, but realised I wasn't really coughing anymore, so didn't as it was unecessary. I went from coughing every five minutes, to about three times a day.

I was told that the original cough had aggravated the windpipe, which was causing a continuing cough which was continuing to aggravate the windpipe, and thus the cycle wasn't ending.

I would suggest giving your child either childrens paracetemol (which is not so difficult to drink) or panadol rapid in warm water. (I was told that the codeine was just a little extra boost, and that just paracetemol might do the trick.)

Can you try Brauers Cough and Cold relief? I found this helps my DS, it's a homeopathic mixture. Also Childrens Calm or something like that?

ETA: Sorry I can't recall if you said she has a runny nose or not in the OP. If she doesn't have a runny nose and it's just a cough, I would run the steamer but not with any vicks solution. I find the vicks is irritating to my DS's throat when he's just coughing but not blocked up. The warm steam only should help.

Same boat here. Pain stop is kinda working here as well as bed on an incline and co sleeping when it gets too hard. Day sleeps in pram as it's easier to resettle.
