Default What would you do? Almost 3yo just had massive spill off the couch

    Hi all,

Just after a general consensus here -

DS2 was just being silly, running an throwing himself at the couch and being a leather couch, he's had too much momentum and somehow managed to throw himself over the arm of the couch and landed on the tiles and cupboard - was an almighty BANG and looked like he'd landed on his head.

He calmed down pretty quickly and on closer inspection, looks like he's landed sort of high on his cheek bone, near the eye socket. It's red and no doubt he'll have a cracker of a black eye tomorrow or the next day, though when I gently push on the area, he doesn't react or say its sore.

So would you do a hospital run or just stay on concussion watch for the next hour or so?

    Kids are tough!
I probably wouldn't go to the hospital but would keep him up for a little while to keep an eye on him and check for any concussion symptoms.

Ice pack or a cold bag of veggies on the area will help with swelling, watch him closely, any vomiting or lethargy etc I would get him checked out.

It happened about 20ish minutes ago and he seems fine. Not confused, no vomiting or lethargy (even for this time of night). Anyone know how long I should keep him awake for just to be sure?

I don't think current advice is to keep them awake but to make sure they can be stirred? Can you ring health direct?

check if his pupils respond to light. That can be a good indicator if there is head injury. Shine a torch or light source into them and watch if the pupils get smaller. They should get larger when the light source is removed.

Does he feel sick? If he starts vomiting take him to hospital.

I called health direct - id never heard of them before.

The nurse I spoke to said he sounds like he should be fine but I have to wake him after he's been asleep an hour and check that he can answer a question and walk without being unsteady on his feet, then repeat this again after another hour of sleep.

He doesn't feel sick, says his head doesn't hurt (though I reckon it will tomorrow) and he has no vomiting
