    Default Interesting story on Autism and Gut Bacteria and Food Additives on ABC last night

    Sounds like an interesting avenue for research.

    I have previously heard mixed reports about any link between Autism and gut bacteria and food additives (specifically preservative 280/propionic acid) but I would like to see more research into this area.

    here is the story for anyone that is interested

    http://www.abc.net.au/4corners/stori...23/3574441.htm

    and you can watch the episode from this link;

    Was a great show. What we are is what we eat!

    I've seen huge success with my own son with the inclusion of fish oils for his speech clarity and comprehension.. Multivitamins (were veggo) and am going to start probiotic after watching this show. It won't hurt and is worth a shot :-)

    It was very interesting. There needs to be so much more research done until they can say one way or the other, but as Happy2be3 says things like Probiotics can't hurt and is deffo worth a shot.

    I think the antibiotic link really needs further investigation as well.

    I have not watched yet but my naturopath always recommends pro biotics and fish oil as soon as babies stop breast feeding ( as I did with DS from 3months)

    Brilliant documentary, so interesting.

    Another here who believes that antibiotics may hold many answers, especially when it comes to overuse in little ones.

    We also use fish oil and probiotics for our 10 week on a dietician's advice...

    DH had terrible gut issues which are now being resolved due to strict diet and some medication, and the doctor be saw specialises in seeing children with sensory disorders/autism/etc and diet is one of the main changes he works with the families to make. He works in conjunction with the dietician we saw.

    Amazing stuff.

    Some other good sites with further info on latest research for Autism;

    http://www.biobalance.org.au/articles/17

    and

    http://evolutionarypsychiatry.blogsp...earch?q=autism

    and a balanced account of interpreting the Autism research

    http://www.emilywillinghamphd.com/20...n-and-new.html

    a couple of the articles mention it, one of the articles in here specifically states:

    I
    n my opinion, the best evidence that autism may not be increasing at all is a report from the Adult Psychiatric Morbidity Study from the UK in 2007 (3). They found that approximately 1% of adults living in households have symptoms consistent with ASDs. Since that is pretty close to the 110 per 10,000 number we have for today's children, it suggests that the enormous increase in diagnosis in kids may be due to increased outreach and widening of diagnostic categories. However, it must be said that a more recent increase can't entirely be ruled out.
    If this is true, then at least it means we are not looking for something new as the article goes on to say. Here is the full link to this article in case anyone wants to read it. http://www.psychologytoday.com/blog/...triguing-links

    It is just such a mysterious disorder, I think it is really important for them to keep researching, and the diet connection is starting to sound quite convincing although i have not read through much of the research it is an area that i am becoming increasingly interested in.

    The probiotics and fish oil sounds like a great idea - I am going to discuss it with my GP for both of my children at our next visit.

    It was very sad how the spore colonization cannot yet be 'killed off'. I think of how traumatic it is for Ellen and her family to see their son exhibit less-austistic traits for the 8 weeks the antibiotics were working and then have the regression.
