Default Was your large family planned?

Hey all - I hope you don't mind me sticking my head in here.

I'm curious to know... Did you always want a large family? Did your partner? Or did it just sort of happen?

How do you find it? Do you cope easily with so many children or do you find it difficult not getting any alone time (or do you get alone time?!) How do you ensure your relationship with your partner is maintained?

I don't know why but 7 has always been the number in my head. Now we only have one ds currently, hubby says probably 3...

We have 5. Number one was unplanned but the rest were planned. We never had a set number, just kept going until we felt finished, which is now!!

Yes we planned it, well kinda.
Before we got married we decided we wanted a large family we were thinking 6.
After the first one and repeated miscarriages, I was told I couldn't have anymore. 6 years later no2 came and then 3 and 4. After that we had trouble getting pregnant again and gave up. than several years later no5 came. Then I decided to have my wls which meant no baby for the year before and a year after. So we decided we would stop at 5. than no6 surprised us.
So here we are with all 6 that we planned

Yes I do get time alone but my 6 are spread out over 18 years.

We have married for 19 years together for 20 so yes we find time for each other.

We decided we wanted 4 but after a horrible third pregnancy 3 was my limit but then along came #4, a complete surprise!! Now that our 4th is here I would love a 5th
I manage really well with 4 even when there is only 5years between all 4 of them. DH is really hands on which helps..
We don't get much time to ourselves but make sure 7pm is bedtime so we can sit down and chat before we go to bed and once every 6 weeks we get family around to give us a few hours out..

FYI - twins on dads side are irrelevant to you falling with twins... Especially identical which can happen to anyone

Thanks for all the replies ladies! Guess only time will tell if we'll get our big family

Default Was your large family planned?

I come from a large family and never wanted one myself ... I just had baby number 5 last month

So no, we never planned on having a large family, but I'm glad it turned out this way now.

I don't get much alone time at the moment because DS3 is only 7 weeks and bf, but before he came along I got plenty. DH and I also got enough time to together. We would often go out for dinner and a movie (maybe once or twice every few months) or spend a night in a hotel (once or twice a year). We are lucky that we have my mum and DH's parents available so we can split them amongst grandparents. My nan is also available to babysit. We never leave them with anyone else though

Also my three oldest are at school, so school days are fairly quiet.

The biggest downsides to a big family are the noise - so much noise! - not being able to afford a big holiday with flights etc and the mess. I feel like all I do is clean sometimes! But the more you have the more you learn to juggle and it just becomes a new type of normal

I always wanted four kids (im one of four, husband is one of five) but aftert second thought maybe that was enough. Four years later we decided we did want another one. Then we had twins so five altogether. I'm happy now we have five, I'd love another one if circumstances were different (like a better marriage and if I'd finished uni already). We don't have much ttime alone but that's not because of the kids. To be honest I haven't found the jump between 3-4-5 much different from the jump between 1-2.
