Can you notice the difference? It's the posing of the children in these photos, might I add, the last pic was VERY hard to come across, lots of pics of kids in bikinis in suggestive poses out there which is concerning!

Interesting photos. And good point about posing.

And looking at the photos I've had an epiphany. It's the triangle string ones I have a real problem with.. As the fabric is skimpier and cut in a cup shape that adults use to support/cover big adult boobies. (if that makes sense?)

The square block bikinis... I don't shudder at them nearly as much.

Same as me vicpark. The triangle ones just don't sit right on a little person. A cutesy, thick strapped bikini... Not so bad. My little girl still won't be wearing one, unless under a rashie. But I dont have the same reaction to those that I do to the triangle bikinis.

Just had a thought, if I have a daughter I won't put her in a bikini (until she chooses she wants one herself). And not because it might be sexual but because that way there is less skin exposed to the sun and less chance for her to get sunburnt even with sunscreen on. If a daughter of mine ends up having my skin she will need all the help she can get.
Just a random thought that popped into my pregnant brain.
If I think I can figure things out, is that curiosity or arrogance?

I picked up a size 1 bikini the other day. It was very cute, and for a moment I imagined how adorable DD would look in it. Then I imagined how much of her skin would be exposed

I don't think it sexualises. Kids often get about with just a cloth nappy or some shorts in summer... that's a lot less clothes and nothing sexual about it. Meh.

I wouldn't do it with my baby girl though, because she's a red head, and needs to be well and truly COVERED! I'll be buying her a freakin wet suit or something before summer hits.

THis is certainly not me having a go, but simply my mind wandering. What's the point in putting a bikini top on under a rashie? Why not just a swim nappy/bikini bottoms, with a Rashie top? What's that extra bit of fabric under the rashie useful for? The mind boggles. Lol

Yeah for people who compare bikinis to being naked/running around in a nappy... I wouldn't let my children run around in public in just a nappy either. At someones house or somewhere private - yes. In public - no way in hell. I don't want photos taken of her and put up somewhere for some sicko to enjoy. Sad that's the way it has to be but it is. Whether bikinis sexualise kids or not.. it's not practical in any shape or form for them. Why do they need a "bra"?? IF you want to be like that just have them in pants and nothing else.

They should be covered up from the sun unless they are only using them in inside swimming pools.

Because (and this is my reasoning too) when we go to the beach, I windsurf or dig holes/build castles with the kids, then when hot or sandy its great to get in the water without the restriction of a Rashie. Same goes for when in a pool, except without the sand to rinse off, when I swim I love the feel of the water against my skin.

Of course when swimming after the sun goes down, or at an indoor pool, we don't bother with a Rashie in the first place. I always put sunscreen on before the rashie and so for the 10 min there is no rashie the vitamin D is actually good for the kids

I haven't come back and read all of this but a few points to make

    - When my girls were babies I could buy rashie/bottom sets with no bikini top. Now they're older these sets don't really exist.
    - They wear the top under the rashie because they want to. Yes I think it is pointless but it is hardly worth arguing with them about.
    - I wear a bikini...not to attract attention or to look 'sexy' but because I find one pieces and tankini's extremely uncomfortable - they're hot and restricting.
    - I will not live in fear of paedohiles. I will not stop my girls from wearing short shorts (that cover their bottom) or bikinis just in case there is a sicko around. Just like I won't cover myself up from head to toe incase there is a rapist around. I protect my kids, but protecting them by restricting their clothing is an extreme measure IMO and not something I am about to do. I remember as a kid in summer, the less clothes I had to wear the better. Actually that's still the case for now for me. Bikini's, short shorts, loose dresses and you'll never see me in a t-shirt in summer...blergh. Way too hot. Even my son lives in singlets and boardies all summer. He wears speedo style bottoms and a rashie to the beach.
-I have tried to understand where people are coming from with bikinis sexualising children and I just don't get it. For me, it's an extremely old fashioned view and I'm surprised so many people on BH have this opinion tbh.

I think it depends on the bikini. Some do look a bit grown up for little girls. That aside - my daughter only wears the one piece sun suits - for us its more about protecting skin.
