I started taking elevit and an iron supplement in 2010 when we were ttcing, I've since had DS and have another one on the way, I stopped taking the Elevit before falling pregnant but I ended up with a pretty bad cold (I hadn't been sick since taking them) so I went back on them. the chemist wearhouse do some great specials on them from time to time so I stock up then.

I was probably one of the people who said I didn't take them as they weren't in my budget. Our budget is strict so that we can afford to have a baby and we made sure of that before falling pregnant. I wasn't told to take folate, I was told to take elevit.

I have been taking it since my midwife told me to even though buying it meant we had very cheap dinners and no fruit for a week (thanks to also needing to fix the car).

I haven't taken it today though as the last 3 times I did it made me vomit. I don't really want to be wasting money on something that is going to make me sick so I need to discuss with my midwife my options.

Any casual attitude I may have had towards taking supplements has been well and truly wiped away by a friend having a baby with spina bifida. This is, of course, more related to pre-conception folate, but I would not not even consider not having pre-conception and pregnancy supplements.

I don't think you have to take Elevit. It's very expensive. Have a look at what's in it and the amount of each vitamin and mineral etc and look at the other brands and find one with similar ingredients. You may b able to cut what ur spending by alot! Your midwife has recommended you the most expensive one.

What if u swallowed it in the middle of eating a meal? You probably wouldn't puke it up if you were eating food at the same time, trick your stomach!

Honestly this kind of bugs me as someone who is still suffering from severe morning (noon, middle of the night) sickness at 14 weeks and counting. We aren't fools, most of us have tried many different things in order to just keep out regular food down, let alone our vitamins!
I've tried it with all kinds of liquids, before my meal, during my meal, after my meal and as soon as it hits the back of my throat I gag and bring up the contents of my stomach.
Heck I've even tried grinding them and drinking them, again, just the taste makes me gag, leaving me to bring up not only the vitamin but anything else I've managed to keep down. Some days I struggle to keep down water!
I understand that people have different experiences that influence their choices, but don't really appreciate being lectured by strangers on the Internet who really don't Understand how hard it is to keep down anything when you are this sick. It's not laziness or complacency! It's a matter of getting through the day!

Sorry. Didn't mean to upset you.
It was just a suggestion, I dunno what methods you have tried already. Some ppl just can't handle the pill on their own. I was horrible with pills as a kid, so putting it in with my food helped me.

No that's ok, I'm just a cranky old cow who's sick of being sick! LOL! I would do pretty much anything (even stick things up my butt) if it meant I could feel human again and live a regular life. I want to do the right thing by my baby and feel really guilty at the lack of adequate nutrition I've been getting lately but my dr has just said to have whatever I can manage to keep down.
