Default Fined for 'swiping' someone else's child

    From this mornings news:

Perth man fined $1,000 for 'smacking' his neighbours 8 year old.son, after the boys mother pressed charges.

The 63 year old pleaded guilty to common assault after he slapped the child 8 times around the face.****edit: it was 5 times not 8, that was a typo..*

On the day of the incident in December 2011 the offender was at home while the child and various other children had been ringing the doorbell all day and doing a runner.
The offender then took the child home to his mother to explain what happened.

    Thoughts?

I wonder what the kid did to make him angry enough to hit someone else's child.
Even if you're from a different generation, you should know you can't get away with that in this day and age without being sued.
I doubt it was just doorbell ringing.

Well he should be fined for assault. There's no reason to hit someone elses child. I agree with him grabbing him and taking him to his parents house but not slapping him I think he got off pretty lightly with a $1000 fine.

However, it's apparently meant to be illegal to have a child under 12 roaming about unsupervised so the mother should also be charged with that.

I can understand he was frustrated, but if he knew the child why didn't he just go speak to the parents & tell them to pull their kid up? Or if the parents were ratbags, call the police & make a complaint?
It wasn't his place to discipline the child really, no matter how angry they made him.

    Default Fined for 'smacking'

Slapping him 8 times is the bit I'm a little shocked at. Maybe (huge maybe) once could be accepted but 8 times! Then in saying that maybe there definition of a slap and mine are very different? It's hard to know cause the media love to sensationalize everything.

ETA the article says 4-5 slaps. Still more than 1.

I'd press charges too! No one hits, smacks or even swipes my child

But why the h3ll was an 8 year old left to roam the streets and be a nuisance to other residents!! is that even legal?

geez if he did that to an adult he would certainly be charged with assault……bit confusing why anyone wouldn't agree he should be at least fined.

Kids are people too - this is clearly assault - if he did it to a woman what would the response be.
