Thumbs up Cigarette plain packaging - awesome ad

From the UK anti smoking lobby, one reason I give a massive thumbs-up to Australia for banning cigarette branding:

Yes because lots of 7 yr olds take up smoking... People dont care about the colour of the packets its whats in the cigarette that makes people smoke. Its an addiction, take away nicotine and all the harmful chemicals. Make it illegal, changing a colour of a packet is just a waste of time IMO. By the time these kids grow up the plain packaging will be the norm so if they are going to smoke I dont think it will be a deterant. Excuse spelling on my phone.

I agree. I don't smoke because I love wasting all my money on those lovely gold packets all the time, I smoke cause I'm addicted!

This is just another way the government can make more money without banning it.

I would love to see it become illegal, I hate being a smoker, but the taxes they get each year over ride everything in their books it seems.

It seems like the govt are doing what they can to make it look like they're trying to crack down on smoking without doing anything that will make a significant number of smokers quit.

I agree about the addiction part, BUT I found that even years after I gave up I would still be drawn to the familiar packaging of my cigarette of choice. I was relieved when they updated their packaging.

I'm an ex smoker, and if I were to take it up again, it wouldn't matter what the packet looked like because I know what is inside.

Most kids grow up knowing that smoking is a bad thing, but once they come of age and can choose whether they want to smoke or not, a plain packet isn't going to change anything.

I don't think having 'pretty' colours on packets are going to make younger kids want to smoke either.

Actually, studies have been done, and the reason the packets are olive green is because they are the least appealing. Plain packaging is not designed to stop people who already smoke from smoking, they're designed deter people from taking up smoking!

If it wasn't going to work at all the tobacco companies wouldnt be spending millions fighting it.

Would changing beer or wine labels stop people buying alcohol?
