    Default Nissan patrol

So my hubby and I are looking at getting a new car, just wondering if anyone owns a Nissan patrol and what they think of them? We are looking at the 3lt diesel turbo, 4 cylinder 2001 model !!

Subbing We're looking to get something similar, except 4.2ltr I think.

Dad has an old Partrol (early 90's) and it has done some serious 4x4ing and is still going strong, hopefully the later models are the same!

Patrols are great for what they are. The diffs, gearboxes and drivetrains are bulletproof, which makes them great offroad.

But I would STRONGLY suggest not buying this one. Not without a lot of research.

The early 3.0L turbo diesels (ZD30 engines) are notorious amongst Patrol enthusiasts. They are pretty much universally known as "hand grenades" for their propensity to fail spectacularly. It is so bad that the enthusiast groups actually put together a kit called "NADS" (Nissan Anti-Detonation System) in order to try to protect themselves from their engine crapping out.

The kit works reasonably well, but the problems with the engine still remain. Nissan made some modifications a few years later after all of the cases of detonating ZD30s (I think the updated engine came out in 2005, but you'll have to check) and they have been a bit more reliable.

The engine to get in the Patrols is the TD42ti 4.2L Turbo Diesel. They are incredibly reliable (there are plenty of 500,000km examples out there that are still running strong) but they command a price premium. Since they stopped making the TD42 engine they have been even more in demand.

I would suggest googling "Nissan hand grenade" and reading up. The problems are so common that you'll find heaps of ebay ads for ZD30 "anti-detonation kits" or "anti-hand grenade kits".
