has anyone had any experience with using lactulose does it work? How long does it take to work?

please do not use microlax, microlax is an enema and if you have ever had an enema they can be extremly painfull. I personally think you need a second opinion from another doctor, my DS suffered from chronic constipation as a baby/toddler and we were prescribed 'soft poo therapy' this basically involves 2 doses daily of a 'stool softner' like parachoc which is oil based. The idea is to soften the poo and coat it in oil so it slides out easily, treatment is not an overnight thing we did soft poo therepy for 6 months as constipation destends the anus leading to as you said incontience and more constipation. Over a period of time on soft poo therapy everything goes back to how it used to be, it also helps the child overcome the fear of pooing (due to pain) and also because you are only using a stool softner not a chemical type laxative there are not problems with the bowel becoming reliant on laxatives to function properly. You really need to see a pead asap or a peadiatric gastroentorolgist.
    Hope this info helps

I agree with lovely. I have a child that has a history of bad constipation and enemas are hell. My DD ended up in hospital with a blockage and needed 2 to shift it and screamed

We use lactulose and it's great, but it does take 24 hours to work. We used parachoc before that with limited effects. The secret is, once your child passes to 1) give them lactulose religiously every day for a few days to keep them regular. There will be a very full bowel behind the blockage 2) when using lactulose you need your child to drink heaps of fluids. 3) one they are regular, keep a good eye on their bowel movements and the moment you notice it turning hard give them the medicine to be proactive. This will stop this happening again

Default Re: Chronic constipation using Microlax and Lactulose??

Agree with both the others, you may find you have to change medications to find what works. We've gone through a few to finally find one that is safe long term and effective on his body. Lactulose was one that never worked for us

It may also pay to see a specialist/pead to help find any underlying cause.

It won't be a short term solution as it's a long term problem. I wish you the best.

eta. Also you may want to keep a record of her poos according to the bristol stool chart, frequency and any discomfort/pain, it will help you know where your at in the constipation cycle.
