    Default Asylum seekers (frustration)

I got into a very heated discussion this morning with a complete stranger (!) about asylum seekers (he called them 'illegal boat people'). He was commenting on an amnesty T-shirt that I was wearing.

There are so many misconceptions surrounding refugees, it makes my blood boil! Why are people so averse to HELPING other humans in need. We are ALL humans. Why are there so many incorrect facts circulating about refugees coming to Australia?!

This has been a turning point for me. I have always donated to amnesty but I'm going to start getting actively involved in campaigning for human rights. I have had enough.

    End rant.

Because some human beings are selfish and do not want strangers sharing their resources.

Most Australians fail to realize is that australia was inhabitated before we got here.

It's sad really. We are all human beings.

People like him aren't even worth discussing it with if they don't even know what they are arguing against. He's just got caught up with some media hype and has his knickers in a twist.

I'm sick of the "go back to your own country" nonsense. And the "this is Straya" nonsense - even our national anthem says we've boundless plains to share for those from across the sea. So to those who carry on about the "unAustralian" crap what do they say to this?

Politicians and the media. Both of those groups fuel misinformation knowingly. Sh*ts me.

    This.

The man who is likely to be our country's future leader (which makes me shudder), continually spouting the slogan "Stop The Boats".

It's a complex issue. The most ignorant of folk are the ones who are sadly the most vocal with their opinions.

I agree Witwicky. I will be looking in to volunteering at our nearest detention centre after this bub is born. The ignorance and misconception surrounding these people makes me so ashamed to be an Aussie sometimes!

This. And sadly I think its also a case of people believing it because they want to. Because its easier to not help and to think we have no obligation.

We need more politicians brave enough to stand up and tell the truth, even when its unpopular and even when it will not benefit them. And we need more people willing to actively work for change.

Agree. Shouldnt we help people less fortunate? How selfish some have become.

Treat others how you would want yourself and your family to be treated. End of.
