I read something a few years back that really resonated with me and I've never forgotten it:
A woman was writing about how her life had always looked perfect, everything was wonderful, then her husband acquired a brain injury and her life fell apart. She had to put everything they owned up for sale. Giant garage sale. A neighbour wrote them a nasty letter about the state of their garden/eyesore.
She fell apart completely. Then she put up a sign outside their house: Please be kind. My husband has a brain injury and can't even remember me most days. We're near bankruptcy. (or to that effect).
The next day the neighbour turned up to help.
She said she wishes sometimes we could all wear signs: Be kind, my mother has just passed. Be kind, I'm battling cancer. Be kind, I have depression. etc etc. She wonders if we'd be kinder to each other if we knew.
We all have our private signs. So I try to be gentle with people, you don't know what their sign might be.

What are they doing? All the best to you and your daughter/family!
Totally agree. It's so easy to forget that others may be going through tough times.
