I guess it all comes down to the sort of car you want. I have a land cruiser and I have a rearward facing merridan, a royale and a maxi rider in there comfortably. We also have a fairlane and 3 across the back of that.

We had three across the back of an older Pajero. I think alot of the bigger sedans (commodores, etc) fit three seats too.

We had a commodore with 3 across but it was very annoying and squashy.
We now have a carnival as we are expecting #4 but i had been considering one before we'd even decided on having #4. Now we have 2 in restraints in the back row and will have 2 in the middle row in restraints and they have heaps of room

We have 3 across the back in our territory and our x trail. Both are tight but they are wide seats so would be more room if we had skinny seats

I have 3 car seats in a Holden Astra. A SnS royale, RF, a SnS compaq, FF, and a SnS hiliner.
It depends how old your little ones are and what sort of seats you need. Some seats are slimmer and will fit better next to others.
There is a section on the NRMA website about fitting 3 restraints in the back seats which is done by car make /model.
