Default Aged Pension / Widow Allowance

Mum is about to start received the pension, on the 23rd August.

But she has just lost her de-facto spouse of 13 years.

Is she able to claim both the pension and widow allowance, or is it one or the other?

I've check over the centrelink website, but I can't find anything to tell me otherwise.

Hi bambino, I work at the Australian Government Department of Human Services in a team that responds to enquiries on social media sites like this one.

Sorry to hear your Mum is going through a difficult time. The Age Pension and Widow Allowance can't be paid simultaneously. Widow Allowance is only paid in limited circumstances and only people born on or before 1 July 1955 are eligible to apply. The Age Pension is paid at a higher rate and has other concessions only available to pensioners.

You might like to investigate Bereavement Allowance, depending on your Mum's circumstances. There's more info about that here; http://www.humanservices.gov.au/cust...ment-allowance

    All the best.

Expectant mothers may obtain an exemption from the Newstart Activity Test or participation requirements from six weeks prior to the expected date of confinement until six weeks after the birth of their child.
