I don't do it for my clothes but I do do it for DS. The one time I didn't wash a shirt before he wore it he got a slight rash across his torso which I tend to think wasn't just a coincidence.

I definitely do pre-wash towels, linen etc especially after I once saw a man walk up to a big pile of nice new soft towels in a store and enthusiastically rub them all over his face whilst making a growling noise (looked like he had a few screws loose...)

But what do people do with dry clean only - do you have them dry cleaned first?
    I was wondering that too!

I love wearing something freshly bought never washed so it looks perfect and new.

I always wash anything new or secondhand that I buy before using it. Clothes, socks, towels, sheets, pillows, cutlery and dinnerware, toys, covers for carseats, basinettes, etc. I don't like the horrible chemical smell, and I certainly don't want it all over my kids' skin.
DH thinks I'm weird, and it's not necessary. My side of the family has always done it though, so it's normal for me.
