I can understand the sentiment if you have people who keep asking for sympathy but don't want to better their situation and like the drama because it gives them something to talk about. But i really think those people are pretty few and far between.
Sometime people just really are having a crap time. A really crap time and they are probably venting on BH because sometimes it just helps to talk about it. Or they are trying to seek help or find others to help them see the positives in a bad situation. If someone is truly having a bad time, they feel horrible enough already, i really don't think they would be trying to "out compete" others for the saddest story.
IRL, maybe it depends on the people you hang around, and the content of their character? When my friends and I go through tough times (and there have been some very tough times) we just support each other, there is no one upping of our suffering. We know you can't compare one persons problem to another, we all deal with things differently.
It was a thread on general social trends, wasn't it??
Anyway, that's how I answered it.
Its just part of who i am.
Seriously i am super paranoid when it comes to social interactions.
Eta - in general life i dont hang out with people so havent noticed this new trend lol

Well I knew exactly what she meant! BH nor real life was mentioned so I automatically assumed she meant in general!

YES! It's like birth stories. No matter what happened to you, somebody else's was worse because blah, blah, blah. You can't just discuss it, you have to decide on who was worse off.
