Errrr, I was looking at jailbroken iphones on ebay and there seems to be some added security risks when jailbreaking.
PLUS it does void your warranty.

    If you read http://www.apple.com/au/support/ipho...faq/#warranty4
it states: Apple's Limited Warranty for iPhone excludes coverage for damage resulting from accident, disassembly, unauthorized service and unauthorized modifications. Please review the warranty for further details.
Jailbreaking could/would/should be considered an unauthorised modification.
Further on this, from Apple's warranty document located at http://images.apple.com/legal/warran...e_Warranty.pdf:
This warranty does not apply: <snip>
    (e) to damage caused by operating the product outside the permitted or intended uses described by Apple; (f) to damage caused by service (including upgrades and expansions) performed by anyone who is not a representative of Apple or an Apple Authorized Service Provider (“AASP”); (g) to a product or part that has been modified to alter functionality or capability without the written permission of Apple

I am not sure if unregistered users can read this and I don't know if a mod will see this as a violation of the rules (it's a tech forum, hardly a parenting forum, so I thought it would be ok), but check this thread out about the downsides and benefits of jailbreaking an iphone:

I have some international friends and when they travel just have to call the network to unlock the phone so they can use a different network. Jailbreaking void warranty so unless you know how to do it and restore, don't risk it

I have done it with my old iPhone, which is now dd's to play with -she has a my little pony theme so the slide bar, background and icons are all my little pony-it's cute!
I am still hesitant to do mine though!

I.had an international phone that needed to be unlocked. I asked the carrier to unlock it, but they refused so I had no choice but to jailbreak it. Once it was jailbroken, I couldn't update iOS without undoing the jailbreak, which will automatically undo the unlock forever, rendering it useless in Australia.

Unless you are a hacker of some kind who needs to buck the system, I really see no reason to do it unless you really have to.

Jailbreaking only voids the warranty if the modification is the cause of whatever fault you are claiming under warranty. If the fault has nothing to do with the modification, your warranty is unchanged. It definitely isn't illegal, here or in the US.

I can't see how that would work though DL. I was in the apple store the other day and a young girl next to me was trying to get her phone fixed under warranty but they wouldn't touch it because she'd had the screen fixed elsewhere. The screen had nothing to do with the issue she was now having. Wouldn't it be the same for any modification?

That sucks. I broke my phone and got it repaired through a repairer who issues an apple screen and a new warranty for the part for $60 odd.

I've since taken it to Apple for the same thing and the new screen/warranty weren't voided.
