The client has to sign the return to state that it is accurate, so it is actually the client's responsibility, not the accountant's. It sucks I know.

Yes, they should be able to do a payment plan. Also, unfortunately, after you have signed your tax return, you have pretty much declared that it is all correct, thus the accountant getting out of his stuff up on his end.

I havent been to a tax agent for a few years now but how are we meant to know they are correct? I am not trained in accounting, i wouldnt know whats what yet we have to sign to say the accountant is correct and any mistakes is our problem. How is that possible?

I did my tax on etax this year and it took me a few hours to do just because i had to go back and triple check everything first. If it was going to be complicated than what i had, i would of paid an accountant to do it and expect them to know their job correctly.

yeah i know, it's obviously a loophole so they can save their a$$es pretty much.

I agree with everyone... It's not really that I wanted him to pay for it (obviously a little part wishes that... Mainly the small, leather part with credit cards and whatnot). It's just really stinky timing to have to find it now. And I would NEVER take him to court over it, it is money that we should never have had. I just wish we never had it...

I was just wondering if there should have been more to it than 'oops, sorry. But at least that was my one and only mistake that year...'

we will definitely contact ATO to arrange a payment plan when we get out 'bill'...

And he's down two clients from now on. Etax here we come!

P.s. myztik, that's what I thought. *I* didn't go to Uni, and if it all comes down to me anyway, why am I paying him?
