Default What's your biggest birthday party mistake?

Currently we are planning for DD's first birthday party. We are preparing for a crazy room full of 1-2 year olds and their parents. I'm starting to think of all the things that could possibly be overlooked or turn out to be a REALLY bad idea and go horribly (or humorously) wrong.

So far I have decided not to bother with a table cloth as I have seen what can happen when a toddler decides to go walking with it.

So what was your biggest birthday party mistake?

Please no 'Inviting my family/friends/coworkers because we had a big fight and it was just awful'
More interested in hearing about the things you forgot or didn't plan for which gave you that 'Doh' moment.

    Stories please!!!!

Nothing really but we have had the worst luck with cakes lol. DS I ordered his then a few days before his party the company went into liquidation but offered a dif cake for free and gave me a refund, it was way way way to sweet you couldn't eat much. And with dd we made her cake but left it to late and were up till like 1130pm making it lol and the yr before we had a joint party and there is only 2 months dif and our DS didn't get a party for his 1st. The cakes just kept stuffing up. So just really bad luck with cakes

Delegate! I was so organized ( and am a control freak!) but spent most of the party preparing food or worrying about decorations and supervising the party games, I never got the chance to sit down and enjoy the party!

My nephew just turned 1. They have a small house. Think 25 babies, toddlers and school kids, their parents, extended family on both sides, the whole bridal party, in a small house with no back yard. Lots of food left, it was too crowded to move, only those close to the table (who were unable to move away) could reach the food. It was noisy and echoed a lot.

Biggest mistake was his second birthday majorly "over doing it" everything I made from scratch, all healthy, all complicated and too clever really. I was trying to show off how awesome I was but I wound up totally stressed out and really what's one day of chicken nuggets and party pies. Tear open packet. Throw on tray
    Done.

I didn't enjoy the day at all and I looked and felt like crap I was so exhausted.

Moving it to be an afternoon birthday to accommodate family at their insistence.

She ended up being absolutely hysterical as she didn't have a full nap, then we were too busy to resettle her, people overload and most of the family who insisted we move it didn't come.

She ended up falling off the couch, getting a huge bump on her head and having a miserable time.

Plan it for when she's at her best that day, everyone else can fit in around that, it's her birthday, not theirs.
