Default Melatonin making 3yr old sad?

    Hi all,

We've just started dd on melatonin for sleep issues as per her paediatricians advice and I think it's making her more emotional..

She told me tonight that she feels a bit sad, like she wants to live on another planet or something :-( it made me so sad. She was full on crying with tears running down her face.. I cuddled her and told her we didn't want her to live somewhere else because we love her too much and she relaxed and went to sleep.

She was more emotional during the day today as well, and cried at the drop of a hat, which can sometimes be normal for her if shes tired, but she slept all night last night.

I guess I'm just looking for others who have used melatonin and if it had any
    side effects on other children.
She's only been taking it for 2 nights so am thinking it could be that the dose is too high and I might need to drop it if it's already causing her to be so sad..

Our 9 yr old was taking it, I think it was a homeopathic blend, is that the same as yours? We noticed an improvement in her sleep (which I was never sure if it was the melatonin or placebo effect), but don't recall her being more emotional. She's pretty emotional in general though, not necessarily upset but her emotions lay close to the surface.

Can I ask why they take them? I was told its only on prescription for adults? We have tried phenergan with no change for DS2

Mine was for sleep issues. She just lies awake for hours most nights and can't sleep. But like I said, I think ours was homeopathic, it was from a health shop anyway so no prescription.

My DS1 has been on melatonin tablets for almost a year for sleep issues and I can't say he's had any side effects. I've found it to be a godsend tbh. If anything his mood improved dramatically because he was getting a decent sleep.

Maybe call the pead asap an ask their opinion? Maybe she is out of whack from the change in how much sleep she's getting? Could be a number of things I guess so best talk to her doctor.

Thermy the ones DS is on are prescription only and are done through a compounding chemist and dosed on his weight etc.

Thanks for the replies ladies. I don't know if I'm looking for side effects where there aren't any.. She is generally quite affectionate and emotional so it could just be the extra sleep..
I'm just paranoid because I feel a bit like I'm drugging her to sleep already so am trying to be extra cautious.

We actually ordered ours from America. Our paediatrician recommended us the website where to buy it as it was only $7.50 a bottle so with postage we could get 3 bottles delivered for less than the price of 1 bottle here.. He didn't want us to use phenergen.

I might halve her dosage if she is the same tomorrow.. He was happy for me to increase or decrease (within provided limits) as we needed.
If needed I can call him on Monday and see what he thinks.
