Muddy/flooded dog yard

Hi guys, we have two gorgeous dogs but they love to dig and make a massive mess. Of course with masses of rain lately their yard has turned to a mud bath. Some grass is left, but half of that is underwater too. So what do we do? Has anyone tried putting something over mud like this?

Can you keep them inside till it dries up?
Our backyard is also just dirt/clay from digging.

Not sure how to get rid of the mud temporarily, maybe tarps staked down? But I guess the dogs might try to dig that up too! But a good way to get dogs out of digging is to tell off the hole instead of the dog. It's a bit odd I know but it works! The dogs won't want to be associated with it and will come to learn they are a bad thing. It takes time and patience but pays off in the long run

Wooden pallets for a short term solution. Can't be dug up and can be easily dismantled into single planks to fit a certain size of run. Easy to get free from fruit shops, warehouses and Safeway.

The only long term solution is concreting. I didn't have mine concreted until the dog sheds were built, so they wouldn't be lying on bare concrete. Easy to disinfect and hose off, and good for training to break anxiety and boredom related habits {such as digging}

Best solution for digging that I've found is selective digging. Fill a clamshell pool with sand and bury treats and toys in it. Digging in the provided area is rewarded, while digging in dirt yields no fun and no rewards, so gradually becomes even more boring than having nothing to do.

I read your topic title and immediately pictured my living room floor haha.

Our 2 young border collies cause much the same destruction when it rains and the yard is to small to not give them the option to use their doggie door.

I haven't been able to find a resolution to our problem so I will be watching this threat with baited breath!!
