    Default Cert 3 children services

There's only one tafe near where I live. Their cert 3 in children services costs $1200 and is for 1 year. Is this normal? I thought the course is cheaper and shorter in duration.

It's only cheap if you have concession card and I'm pretty sure I paid nearly $3000 for mine at Tafe!!!! And it took 12 months to complete

i think it also depends on the duration of the course, doesn't it? I did mine slowly over 12 months, went to Saturday classes every fortnight as I was working at the time.. I don't think mine cost that much, but it was also paid for by my job agency so I was lucky.

Mine was part of the first 6 months of my two year diploma full time TAFE course. It cost $1000 a year so $2000 for my entire diploma but I did it in 2003-2004

That 1 year is full time. I'm thinking of doing part time so it will even be longer. For some reason i've always thought child care courses are heavily subsidised by the government.

The Diploma recently was, not sure if it still is or not. Mine was done in 1998 part time because I also worked 3 jobs, and the whole thing cost 2k, the Diploma was another 2k at the time, but with so many people stopping at Cert 3 they made it a free course for those with a Cert 3 who were working in childcare at the time. At my centre, we ended up with Assistants and Group Leaders sitting on a Diploma, and I think it did the centre a lot of good. I'm not sure if they still have that or not.

Hi lovesushi! This is a pretty good course cost in my opinion. Have you talked to centrelink about government grants that you may be entitled to? I did my Cert 3 in childcare with a small company called inspire education - they had a deal running at the time so my course was very well priced! If your studying online you can have up to 12 months to complete, but at the time I wasnt working, I was a stay at home mum so I had some extra time around to complete it earlier than the year... hope that helps
