We pay 400 a week for a huge 4 bed plus large study ( We use as DDs playroom), separate family and dining, theatre room, outdoor deck and small yard ( big enough to fit swing set and trampoline but not much else). We are 25k from Melbourne CBD in a suburb that has everything we need ( schools, DRs, large shopping centres etc). It's way cheaper than where we were in Canberra. 400 would get you a 2 bed townhouse in Canberra.
One of the reasons we picked Melbourne when looking to move was the rental and property prices were low compared to other cities but employment opportunities are high. Adelaide seemed cheaper but less employment opportunities an higher unemployment rate.
We don't want to buy again anytime in the next few years as we like the flexibility renting has if we want to move or change our lifestyle. Plus we want to have much more money than just the 10% deposit to contribute before buying again in order to get a smaller loan and pay less interest. We can put more savings away at the moment renting than the principle amount that was being paid off our mortgage.

It is a vortex isn't it. I am born and bred in Newtown and have lived as an adult in Newtown, Alexandria and St Peters before recently moving out of Sydney. I don't miss the overcrowding and Newtown driving and parking - but boy do I miss the cafes!

We were looking at Marrickville before we moved here but happened upon this place by chance and it's a pretty sweet deal, nice not being in a flat! Did you guys end up in marrickville, I remember a thread a while back about where you were looking..not stalking I promise!

We pay $295 for a 5 bedroom house on a big block.... but we're at Stanthorpe and have access to nothing really.

It's a really small community, but suits our needs right now while DH is a full time student and I'm mumming/relief teaching.

There is one specialist that is still in Sydney, if we do the drive down and back in a day it takes 7 hours of driving. But he does do skype appointments now, so that helps. Also I notice the waiting lists for things are way less here than in Sydney. I need to source a couple more specialists and have a feeling I may have to go to Sydney for them. But overall I am really happy with the services available here.

Our rent compared to sydney is way less and we get way more. Not to mention the kids have lots of room in a nice area, etc.

I don't know share a book, It sounds like a struggle - but I'd try and keep the house if I were you. We may never break into the market, rent is ridiculous and raising a deposit is so difficult once you have kids - especially if they are special needs and the added expense etc.
Looking at rentals has made me think this is cheaper. Unfortunately the closest specialists north or south are 5 hours away, and west you're looking at 12 hours and for the more difficult ones they are sent here.

DP works in Newtown and whenever I drive there to pick her up and get stuck behind a fricken truck driving through narrow streets with cars parked on both sides I am like "NEVER AGAIN!"

But I always end up back there...

Bahah, I know, I have a little freak driving round newtown, I have a a commodore station wagon - really not made for parking in Newtown. My mum still lives there so I have to go quite a bit. Arrgh.

Love our place and so central and fortunately not in the area DP works in (only just, though). Also love the greek delis around here

My old place wasn't a flat, I do miss it in some respects but I feel a lot safer here, it's more secure and I LOVE having the train and not only buses to rely on (even though I never get PT!)

    and no cruddy housemates
Marrickville is the bomb for food! It's so easy to get around/get anything you need. I am a bit bummed that we didn't end up there!

It is a tough situation, but yeah, better stay where the specialists are or you'll spend all your time driving around and paying a fortune in petrol!

I miss the cafes and I'm only in Redfern! Haha but yeah it's so crowded and seems to be getting more and more so. I do look forward to getting away from the Sydney crowds completely one day!

Renting is a joke! Paying $410 a week for a tiny 3 bedroom 2 bathroom house - and its good value! Some of the places around us are shockingly over priced. Have had so many problems with the property but still saying goodbye to $820 a fortnight. Deposit is our problem too it is so hard to get a deposit together when there are always always always bills and expenses. Vicious cycle this renting business!
