I use them for everything. They're so much faster (as so few people use them), and I'm perfectly capable of scanning things quickly.

I've worked in retail (including on checkouts) and have no problem with it reducing job numbers.

Once upon a time self-serve petrol stations were a novelty too.

I like the normal checkouts because I like to be served. It's nice to have someone do something for me...it's such a rarity in my life

I love them. I hate being served by a checkout person and I think it's awkward I get annoyed when shopping centres don't have them.

As a checkout chick, I just want to add afew things...

    - Checkout chicks are TOLD to make small talk, they're not doing it because they want to be annoying. They then get mystery shoppers who score them on every single thing they do. But then there's me, who's a naughty, stubborn checkout chick, who recognises that it's a huge PITA to go to buy your bread and milk and be harrassed by a chirpy checkout chick with "hi how are you? has your day been ok? what are your plans for the weekend? have you tried this bread before? what's it like? that's $5 thanks. do you have flybuys? have you heard about our new C**** mastercard? you get great rewards from it. have you heard about the new my5 for flybuys? It's like choosing your very own specials. is that on card? is it credit? do you want to pin or sign? do you want to use the new paypass? oh you don't need to pin or sign for that as it's under $35. Do you want the sports for schools vouchers? Thanks, have a nice day!"
*takes a deep breath* yes I kid you not, we are told to say all those things! But I REFUSE to say all that nonsense so you'll only get a 'hi how are you', and 'thanks have a good night' from me! So yeah I totally understand if people want to use self checkouts to avoid that!.... although... we are also told to make small talk with people at self checkouts! No one does though.

    - 95% of the time, they come up with errors because you've done something wrong! They actually work quite well when you know how to use them. There, I said it.

I don't really believe it's taking a job away from someone either... there is someone employed to supervise the area, and surely the system creates employment in other areas (technology, maintenance etc).

It's not like six self-serve registers equates to six conventional registers that would otherwise have employed six human beings. The fact is that there never were that many registers open before-hand; there would have been one open, and we would have been queuing at it.
At my coles, we never used to wait long. There would be 4 express lanes and at least 5 other checkouts, sometimes up to 8 on busy days. I went in there last week after a week of not going (we shop weekly) and there is now 1 express lane and when I went in there was the express lane for baskets only or the self serve check out which of course all the trolleys had to line up at. I bought only a few gluten free items then went to a different Coles. The week before that there were no self service checkouts and no waiting. I do not like the new set up and will now shop elsewhere.

If I go through the check outs I like talking to the check out person - sometimes it feels like my only face to face adult conversation all day! Thought it's awkward when I'm chatty and they aren't. Lol. Though ask me how I am and tell me my kids are cute - I'm good.

Yeah I used to be a checkout operator. Still think it's awkward.

I avoid them. I find proper checkouts much easier and faster and I hate how everything is becoming automated or self service.
