There would be a bunch of people who's job has been to establish and maintaining the self service checkouts.

For small shop yes- especially if I'm having a subconscious day feeling ugly or cranky. But I too like the ladies on the checkout I have a regular one who always talks nicely and seems to remember me every time I go in even without the kids.

I only use them if the manned check outs are busy or I only have a few items. Not because I think it takes away anyone's job but because I don't often have people doing things for me!

Originally Woolies did it to address the needs and wants of the market. It was about providing customers with the option to serve themselves if they were unhappy about waiting in line.

Happier customers eventually equates to more money.

Love self serve. Will only use for small shops ie baskets. I think there should be a no trolleys/no kids rule. I felt the whole point was to make people less cranky about waiting. I get more cranky having to wait in line for the self serve if people are.taking forever compared to the general waiting in line at manned check outs.

I hope our store gets more soon!

I love them because you get a more intelligent convo with the machine than dealing with a sullen annoying teen who has no idea about customer service

    Hehe.

I once tried to buy a DVD for DD through self serve. Holy heck that was a rigmarole.

When I first scanned it I needed special assistance. Fair enough - they had to unlock it.

Then when the assistant gave it back to me and swiped her thingy to say all was good it had a fit because ITEM
NOT IN THE BAGGING AREA. Um, yes it is. Assistant did her swipey thing again and I moved on.

Then when I finished I had an ITEM REQUIRES VERIFICATION message. The DVD. Because, you know, let's verify I really have it. I mean I may have decided to swipe it and have the cost added without actually planning on taking it home. Just for fun.

Then the girl had no idea what button on the screen to press to verify she had sighted the DVD. Despite there being a button saying 'verified item'.

I hate self serve. Except at IKEA. They have it down pat.

NancyBlackett, let's be honest - is there anything about IKEA you don't love?

I only use them if the only check out open has the guy who proceeds to tell me how much sugar is in EVERY single item he scans for me!! Argh!! I hate it!

Look if I had to pick one thing it would be ... Um. The other people in my way. And it's probably unfair to blame IKEA for other people ...
