We have a fence and the gate is always locked. So no one gets in. Better yet, the doorbell is at the front door, which u can't get to if u can't get in the gate full-proof system!

"baby sleeping DO NOT KNOCK/RING" signs are great.
I also tell them that we prefer to donate directly to charities, and have already committed ourselves

a do not knock register wouldn't really work because people just go from door to door to door.but they should respect the sign!

though I worked for a catalogue company when I has 18 & was told point blank to ignore the "no junk mail" sign :-/

Well I'm not home Mon-Fri business hours so I guess I'd miss a lot of these knockers, though DH has had the occasional knocker in the day but it's usually religious folk.

If I get a knock at the door when I'm home alone with DS, I ignore it. I don't have any friends or family who drop in before calling first, so I know I'm not ignoring a legitimate visitor.

If I was you I'd ask through the door "who is it?" and if it's an unwanted knocker than you can spare yourself the inconvenience and not open the door. Just call out "sorry, it's a bad time".

I always say we are on 1 income and can't afford it, and usually wave a dirty tea towel or crying baby at them, seems to get the message across.

I say that we are not in a position to donate at the moment. And that's it.
