Do you think teachers are overpaid or underpaid?

I don't think they are underpaid at all because they seem to be earning a lot more than nurses.

Nurses are underpaid too IMO.

Although a few nurses I've encountered on here recently make me wonder if they should even be in that position, but that's another story.

Nurses make about the same or more if they're getting shift loading.

My husband is in a position with the same risks as a nurses roll and he gets about $23/hour.

The amount of mothers I read here who are extremely overwhelmed here with 1, 2, 3, 4 children makes me think teachers should be millionairres!!

I have SO much respect for my DS' teachers. They play a MASSIVE role in our lives. I consider my old teachers to have had a large role in my upbringing, I think so fondly of most of them.

I'm disgusted that the woman who is responsible for my son's education, along with other students, is paid not much more than me despite her study, the stressful job... high school teachers get the added bonus of the disrespect from some of the teens on a daily basis :\

I can kind of understand why the rest do nothing, people's attitudes toward teachers is revolting. They're overpaid, they get heaps of holidays, they finish work at 3 pm... people must think it's some kind of luxurious lifestyle

If parents don't respect the important role teachers play in our families lives, of course teens aren't going to give them the respect they deserve

I never said they were over paid to clarify. I said in Wa they are adequately paid. That's the general feeling of most teachers I know here including my own mother. I don't think their job is easy .. no way..

Underpaid. After you hit the top salary (after 10 years in qld) that's it. No chance for further money unless you want to be a principal. No bonuses, perks, extras for going above and beyond. There's a great deal of goodness of your heart stuff going on if you are a committed, caring teacher.

Don't even get me started on the holidays. We are on holidays right now. DH has had 3 phone calls and spent half a day on the laptop doing work already. It's day 2. And we're camping :/

As I nurse it can be just as stressful and difficult at times if not more demanding both physically and mentally we still put up with abuse and sometimes violence as teachers do and are exposed to communicable diseases . We still have our HECS debt but we don't get all the school holidays off or work a Monday to Friday job. I can never work out why public servants (nurses, police and teachers) are paid so differently we are all there to help, protect and teach the community.

I don't think it's fair or right to say that teachers aren't underpaid because some earn more than nurses!

Apart from most teachers and nurses working in the public sector, I don't think they can be compared.

And just to clarify, teaching is not a Monday to Friday job.

That was my brother I mentioned and he is in WA which just reading a couple of posts here seems to be better paid than other states?

He is in a public primary school in an so so area of Perth.

Teachers ARE underpaid. The question wasn't either/or. I also think nurses are underpaid.

Just because one profession is underpaid doesn't mean other professionals should be underpaid.

I think a lot of it has to do with the fact that both professions are a predominantly female based employment

Nurses have the enormous benefit to be able to salary sacrifice which effectively means they end up getting taxed less - swings and roundabouts.

I'm a nurse and while it's not the greatest pay there are lots of benefits too. And fwiw if I wanted to I could work mon-fri nursing.
Teachers work damn hard I just have look at my sister to know that. It's not a monday to friday join and they certainly don't get weeks upon weeks of holidays every year. It's just time away from face to face teaching.
