Default Cult recruiting mums in Melbourne

So call me naive, but when I saw a little poster advertising for free portrait photography for children, by a local girl just setting up in business as a photographer, I thought it sounded like fun.

She is lovely. Charming and pretty and has a really nice way with my stroppy 3 year old. She came over and spent a whole morning taking photos of the girls and I and we had lunch. Then she came over a week later and dropped over the digital files for some really beautiful pictures.

It was only when she was about to leave that she handed over a little card and the penny dropped that she was a cult recruiter. There has been one, friendly, follow up call. She's not at all bothersome, and is going to get nowhere, but I have one question.

Is it immoral of me to string her along and have her take photos of my daughter's birthday party, as we have discussed, knowing that she is (probably) only after recruiting my mummy friends with her free pictures scam. If I forewarn everybody? OK, so she's a wily culty little miss, but she does take a lovely free photo?

The only downside I can see is that it might make some of my friends uncomfortable. Or that somebody might call her on her cultyness. Or that the scientology aliens will steal my children's souls through the medium of culty pictures...?

I don't know whether it's immoral but I'd say its definitely not a nice thing to do.

I am not religious in any way and feel that many religions can be quite dangerous to vulnverable people. But the fact is, whether or not you agree with what she's doing, she probably genuinely believes that by getting people to join her religion that she's helping them. Taking advantage of that to get free photos makes you no better than the people who probably recruited her.

Also, you might be strong enough to resist any cultish-advances but you truly don't know whether every parent you rope in to this is also that strong. Some people are surprisingly succeptible to this kind of marketing and you'd probably feel pretty bad if you unwittingly involved a friend in a cult wouldn't you?

I don't agree with religious recruiting and I don't like what she's doing. But two wrongs don't make a right. Be the better person and walk away.

As much as I'd love to see footage of inside a cult on a hidden camera

...I think you are proably better off to invest in a good quality camera Digital SLR are really simple and easy to use...

Ishty raises a good point [if you are paranoid type of person] -- what IS she doing with your photos??

I would probably ditch her. If you look in local groups, there are often student photographers looking to take photos to gain experience. Many only charge enough to cover costs like travel and printing.

It is a good point. I don't know exactly about privacy rules around photos but I think they're pretty loose (certainly you can take photos of people in public and keep them without their permission), unless you've signed something that says the photos are yours only there may be some implied ownership to the photographer, particularly if you've invited her to be there in that capacity.

Another thought might be that if she does come to photograph your childs birthday party she's probably likely to bring another person or two for assistance (they rarely continue to work individually), and by arranging this with her you're effectively giving them implied consent to talk to all the kids at the party.

I'm not sure if all the kids will be 3 and under but I wouldn't be comfortable with religious recruiters chatting to my kids that's for sure.
