What are the signs and symptoms?

Trying to work out if DS2 has it or if he is just stubborn...

We are currently in the middle of assessment for him, and the only thing everyone can agree on is they don't know what it is,but whatever it is its "complicated"

Hi. I don't have a child with ODD, but know of 2 children with it.

It is usually not diagnosed until the child is in primary school. Many toddlers are defiant, but it's only when it continues well into primary school, and alarmingly so, that it can be taken seriously.

It often co-exists with ADHD. A great book by Dr Christopher Green, Understanding ADHD, has a chapter on it and is worth reading.

Ds1 has ODD but he's also ADHD. How old is your child? We got the run around of 'we don't know, try this this and this' until he was 6 and diagnosed with ADHD and high functioning (low spectrum) autism. The ODD wasn't diagonsed until 12month after that.
Usually ODD goes hand in hand with another behavioral disorder and won't/can't be diagnosed as the pp said until school age.

Oh forgot to add, the signs are hard to distinguish for us as ds1's ADHD is pretty dominant and full on. I think in these cases it's hard for an untrained eye to spot the small nuances that differ between ADHD and ODD.

YES my Ds has ODD and ADHD and a speech delay. I wasn't given much info only a diagnosis but basicly from what I was told is that ODD is exactly that stubborn defiant doesn't follow orders etc illask my pead for more info. But tell ya what it's a struggle daily feel like ripping out my hair

Whatever it is he is very defiant, he never ever does what I ask, ever. If I say "no" or "don't do that" he has violent tantrums, He has a speech delay, he has multiple sensory processing disorders and possible auditory processing disorders. There is ASD in my family, but it just seems so different from the other ASD kids.

He is always on - jumping of furniture, crashing around, hurting people. But when the tv is on he will sit there frozen for however long it is on.

He doesn't play with other children- except maybe to hurt them. He likes adults. He gets excited to see a couple of my friends (very un autistic so I'm told).

Eats about 4 or 5 different foods and that is it, won't even try anything else, he would rather go hungry.

The worst part is he has no sense of fear or danger at all - it is terrifying - and I am not exaggerating, he has almost died about 5 times from doing things like running in front of cars and the other day he climbed over a banisters (that I was sure was way too big for him to get over) with about a 10 meter drop onto concrete down below, I just go to him, I swear I have lost about 10 years off my life from the stress of him always doing that. He has had two lots of stitches in his head in 4 months already this year

I am pulling my hair out. He is in EI, goes to OT and is on the wait list for speech - but we still don't know what it is. We have our ASD assessment tomorrow - so maybe I will know something more as of tomorrow. sigh!

yes i do. mine is 8. he also has aspergers.
my ds was super violent. super aggressive. very non social. very defiant. had zero sense of fear or danger. doesn't seen to be able to predict consequence. will do anything and everything he possibly can to upset you.

I should add he's compulsive with things very particular extremely defiant massive violent tantrums (difficult cause he's 122 cm n 20kg at 6 n I'm only 157cm n 50kg) swears obsessive fixates on things no attention span nasty violent towards animals other children adults Back chats argues all this started at 2 was told its just terrible 2 s but I knew It was more no fear at all does alot of dangerous things like running across main rd escaping house n yard getting into cleaning products n covering cats in them killing pet rats n fish he also has ADHD and speech delay and 6 months behind mentally very difficult
