My DD1 is in Year 2 in QLD. Our Principal had a big section in the newsletter about the new curriculum and the expectations on report cards, and she said that she thinks C = celebration. C means they are exactly where they should be at this stage.
DD1 will be expected to count to 1000 and back from 1000, read at level 20 and add and subtract...they are also learning their multiplication table.
Maybe tell your DD that things are a bit different now and C = Celebration, cheer her up about her report card, bless her. Sounds like she is right on target.

See, this is why at my school, we don't put A-E grades on our report.
As a year one teacher in qld my advice is...you could go on the national curriculum website and see the grade two learning outcomes an indicators
Unfortunately the new curriculum is a lot more advanced than qld is used to and most children will b getting c's. We gave out VErY few a's and b's!!!
I however made sure I organised interviews with all the parents of students who got Ds to sit and give parents the heads up and discuss some things we could both do to enhance their understanding. Maybe see the teacher again and ask what things you can do at home to reaffirm concepts taught in class... Perhaps you could ask for a communication book to be sent home daily/ weekly where she keeps u in the loop about your DD progress and behaviour. Then you dont miss anything and its all recorded.
Hope all goes well. Must b hard to see your little one having a hard time!!! X
Oh and my year ones are expected to read a level 14-16 for a c equivalent at end of year one! Think year two is a 25 or so!
Thank you everyone, I do feel so much better now I understand it a bit more..and I love love love the C for Celebration xxx

Can I ask without derailing the thread how I find out in Vic what is expected of kids reading levels etc or is it school based and I need to speak to the school. Sorry don't mean to hijack.

Yeah I just taught year 3 and majority of them were reading level 20-30 so if your DD is 19/20 half way through year 2 she is right on par if not even ahead!
they also wrote in our newsletter how a C was good.
