For me personally, DH was never my partner. He was my boyfriend, then my fiance, and then my husband. I hate the term partner.

But, I would consider that if a couple have moved in together, and aren't engaged, then they are partners. I have friends who are in this position, and they call themselves partners, so I do as well.

This was the same. DH was never called my partner. Boyfriend (even when we were living together, then fiance, then husband.

When you've been together so long that boyfriend sounds tacky or you've got a house or children together, IMO.

Haven't read all of the replies, but my criteria for partner is:
-Must be making plans together for the future
-Have passed the honeymoon phase / faced a reasonable hurdle in the relationship
-Seen each other at your worst (ugly cry, really angry. jealous, vomitting)
-Support the other through something difficult
