At what age do children usually move into a big bed?

My daughter was at sixteen months.
My son was in a toddler bed at 13 months, he was in a normal bed at 2 years.

Both my two went straight into single beds with a rail for the first 6 months. DD was 13 months And DS was 8 months. Both slept better in the beds as they weren't waking themselves up bashing into the sides/ends of the cot.
Neither fell out much (once or twice each) or even realised they could get out by themselves for ages after going into the bed. I also used a rolled beach towel under the fitted sheet for the first week after the rail came off as a reminder where the edge was.
I think as others have said it depends on the child and the cot as to when to move them.
    Me DH + DD(Dec 06) + DS(March 09) = My wonderful wee family
