Go with their instincts? They were originally bred as herding dogs, then progressed to children's nannies, and then progressed to dragging injured soldiers off the battlefield because of their jaw strength and loyalty.
Which of those original instincts relates to killing?
What's sad is that chances are you wouldn't be able to pick a APBT out of a lineup of about 100 other breeds. They are banned here in vic, have been for a while. Yet bite statistics have risen in the past year.
At least another poster had the right idea about it being the owner's fault.
If you're mentally deranged enough to take a small puppy and abuse it to the point where it defies it's instincts {see what I did there?

} and becomes HA or DA...it's not really going to matter what breed of dog it is.
Ban the APBT and the nutters move onto something else. Eventually the only resource left to you is to ban every single breed of dog or any animal over knee height, which is illogical.
Dangerous dogs belong to dangerous owners. I had a DA Dobermann and he died last year, after 10 years of never biting or even rushing another dog. That's because I recognised his aggression, took steps to prevent it escalating, and contained him in a responsible and appropriate manner.
Sadly, that's too hard for some people. They prefer to buy an underage "english staffy" from the Trading Post, shove it outside on a chain, beat it when it bites for attention, encourage it to bark and snarl at strangers, and then when it escapes and mauls someone they say "It wasn't me! It's the dog's fault!". Then they go and buy another. Repeat cycle of abuse.
Banning certain breeds just prevents the responsible owners from owning them. The idiots don't give a damn if they're illegal...they're already breaking the law by having an unregistered, uncontained aggressive dog; what do they care if they break another law by having a restricted breed, unregistered, uncontained aggressive dog. Once they can no longer buy an APBT, they'll buy a Stafford. Once those are banned and bred out, they'll buy a Great Dane. Once those are banned and bred out, they'll buy a Labrador....while the majority of owners are saying "Hey, that's not fair! None of my dogs have ever bitten someone!" Nope, but the idiot's dogs will keep biting, because the dog isn't the issue.
Some other countries have wised up to BSL costing too much and being too ineffective, and have taken on owner-based responsibility laws. Their dog bite statistics have dropped remarkably, dump rates have dropped, shelter euthanasia rates have dropped...all round good.
I believe that Holland and the Netherlands have implemented "Your Dog, Your Responsibility" programs, with great national success.
Too bad our Government is still 10 years behind in their problem solving abilities. While they pour money into yet another program that doesn't work and just takes us backwards.
