Default Empty yolk sac at 6wks 5 days. What does this mean?

I had a dating scan this morning. I had been charting so Im almost 100% of my dates, I believe Im 6wks 5days. The scan showed the yolk sac measuring at 17mm but no sign of a foetus. It was empty. Technician believes that Im 6wks 2days based on that measurement.

Im absolutely gutted. She said to come back for another scan in 2 weeks time. However, I feel Ive already given up. If there is no foetus now, not even a shadow, then what are the chances of one showing up in a week or two? Everything Ive found on Dr Google says that if there is no sign of a foetus with the sac measuring 17mm, then its a blighted ovum.

Has anyone had an empty yolk sac and then have the foetus develop later on? I believe I should be preparing myself for a blighted ovum, followed by a D&C

This EXACT thing happened to me. I also believed I was only a couple of days short of 7weeks pregnant but the sac was empty.. I did a lot (and I mean A LOT) of reading in the couple of weeks that followed and honestly, it can go either ways. There are a lot of good stories out there where people have gone on to have a successful pregnancy but there is also a lot of stories where it turned out to be a blighted ovum. Mine was the later. My HCG levels were also quite high which I believe kind of gave me a false hope that everything was okay. I had a couple more ultrasounds in the following weeks but there was never anything inside the sac. Eventually (around 10-11 weeks by my dates) the sac started decreasing in size. I ended up having a D&C once I was 100% confident that it was a blighted ovum as I knew deep down I owed it to myself to be confident with this decision and not be left wondering 'what if'.

Good luck. If you have any more questions I would be happy to answer but as I said, there is a lot of stories where people go on to have a successful pregnancy and you could very well be one of them...

    Hi Brulee,

Firstly, sending you lots of hugs, as its so stressful when you don't know whats going on..

Similar thing happened to me in Jan this year. We'd been trying for over a year & finally fell preg. My HCG was through the roof & the doctor said this means a sign of a healty pregnancy. I went for a dating scan about 7.5 weeks & there was just a sac there & a yolk but no baby or heart beat. I tried to stay positive but knew something was wrong. About three-four days later I saw my GP & my HCG was still increasing. I went to go & see my OB/GYN which would've been about a week later & they did another scan but there was nothing there. It broke my heart. My sac hadn't even increased in size. It was there that my doctor confirmed that I had a missed miscarriage & had to have a D&C.

I have read other people's stories on here though where they have had the same thing happened, waited one-two weeks & when they went back it had progressed. I have read quite a few stories like that on here.

I hope my story doesn't scare you, I just wanted to let you know my experience. I hope that they're able to do another scan in a weeks time & give you some answers. It really is such a hard time & sending you heaps of hugs.

If you need to talk/vent about anything, feel free to PM me. Wishing you all the best. xx

    Hi ladies,

Thank you all for your thoughts and hugs. Its just such a crap feeling knowing that Im essentially pregnant...but there is not yet a baby

Im gearing myself up for a miscarriage...I stupidly spent all yesterday afternoon on Dr Google and 99.9% of what I came up with was bad news. I know I shouldnt give up until Im given the verdict, but I know my chances of success are slim.

Im absolutely gutted. We went through a tonne of IVF to conceive DD, and this time it was a natural miracle. We couldnt believe we were so lucky to have fallen pregnant naturally after all the heartache involved with IVF, and now this is taken away from us.

Ive booked in for another scan next Thursday, but Im not holding out much hope.

Onwards and upwards and we pray we are lucky to be blessed with another natural miracle.
