Re the antibiotics thing, this winter was the first time that DH had gone *4 months out of his entire life* without antibiotics.

With his parents, colds, sore throats, a sneeze, hayfever...all are life threatening illnesses that require immediate antibiotic treatment.
Their family doctor is extremely compliant, giving prescriptions on request for the most insane things.
"I feel a cold coming on...better make an appointment with Bob!"

I swear if they weren't on medicare they would be paying a couple of grand every 6 months for appointments and medicine.

I'm from a family where the doc was the ultimate last resort. I get sick maybe once every few years. When I had morning sickness it was the first time I ever remembered throwing up and it terrified me

I forced DH to stop overmedicating and he's so much healthier

'go put a jumper on or you will catch a cold'
umm....colds are caused by viruses, not the weather

dosing kids on antibiotics (again, a cold is a virus, not bacterial) and using panadol on low fevers. fever is the body's way of FIGHTING the virus so when you lower it, you are essentially helping the virus!

and not to drink milk - it is a myth that milk causes mucous.
also a myth about the vicks on the feet but i do think it actually helps - if you think about chinese medicine and reflexology it does make sense.

like a pp said, i eat a nice hot wanton soup with fresh chilli. chilli is fantastic for colds - helps open the sinuses and chilli is packed with vitamin c
    go chilli!

Ooh, the first I heard of that was from my cousin when we were living together and she got sick once. She was having a Milo and saying she shouldn't be having milk.. I was . When she told me this little "theory", I must admit that my initial dismissing of it escalated into an unreasonable anger over the fact that people genuinely believe it.

I had some sort of bug just after Christmas and threw up. Other than once as a result of intense pain a few years ago, I could not remember the last time I'd thrown up.... maybe primary school? I'm rarely sick, my kids are rarely sick. My husband gets has bad sinuses, but he doesn't get sick often either, but a lot more than I do. I'm also one who comes from a family that the doctor is for if things are really bad. DH's family are quite the opposite. I'm also, um, not very good at housework.... I think we have developed a great tolerance to germs!

DH's mum is quite certain that if you are sick, especially with a cold, you should eat pawpaw and mandarin. Specifically those fruits.

In regards to flu vs. cold, if I have a bad head cold I might refer to myself as being 'a bit fluey' to describe how I'm feeling.

Ummmm…… I got the flu after having the fluvax for the first time. Was in bed for two weeks and wished I could just die.

Have never had the fluvax since and never had the flu since either.

You will never convince me that it wasn't the fluvax that made me that sick. Maybe I'm one of the minority who has a reaction to the vax, maybe not but I refuse to allow anyone to inject me with last years flu strain, live or otherwise, when the flu mutates every year.

    Just sayin lol.

And I'm with everyone who hates hearing 'I've got the flu' when it's really just a cold. As previously stated, I've had the flu so don't tell me a runny nose and slight fever is the flu lol.
