Can you explain to me why a fertile young couple with no medical issues would take months to fall pg? I can't seem to understand why even doing everything right and being healthy and fertile there is still only a 20-30% chance of conceiving?
It is not just a matter of timing intercourse to ensure healthy, fresh sperm meet the egg, it is also about what happens next. There has to be successful development of the DNA from the egg and the sperm, to form a viable fertilised egg capable of becoming an embryo. If there are genetic "mistakes", it may not implant. Even if fertilisation occurs, it may not successfully implant into the uterus. (Fertilisation + Implantation = Conception). There are many steps that must be successful. The body is very good at getting rid of fertilised eggs if they are unlikely to result in successful pregnancy. So...even if you are young and fertile, it is not uncommon for couples to try for 6-12 months before conceiving a successful pregnancy.
It is such a complicated series of events, from 2 cells which then go on to form a baby...each step must occur before pregnancy can progress.
It is an amazing and remarkable event, it is surprising it happens at all really!! Did you know an embryo has a heart-beat at 6 weeks 2 days (just over 4 weeks from conception, and the merging of only 2 cells)!!

Thanks for the info J37. There is so much involved and so many bits of the process that can go wrong. Hard to believe people accidentally fall pregnant.

Just a question cause I'm so confused I did opks all this month and got a positive on cd 23 and 24 and then 9 days later I got Af, luteal phase can't be that short, what could of happened? My body is confusing me? From 37 day cycle last month that means I have gone down to a 32 day cycle this month.
hi shelby, I also had a 9 day luteal phase last month. i spoke to my naturopath friend who specialises in womens health and she said it is very common for a few months after stopping bcp because there is still too much estrogen in your body - you need progesterone for your luteal phase. im not sure if that helps but thought i would let you know! fx its a one off!!
