don't listen to people who aren't there with you every day day in day out 24/7.

It's okay to say no to visitors especially if it's your mum or MIL who aren't helpful

    Don't get a new puppy!!!

It's chaos with a toddler and a puppy

Ow, and try not to let it bother you when people tell you when and what time you child should sleep!! ARGH this SO annoys me!

For some reason people are so opinionated on this (childless and older people in particular!) but I've read up on infant sleep science and know that keeping babies awake in the hope they'll sleep longer later is counterproductive!

Relax (Ds got really sick as a newbie and set me up for 15 months of extreme anxiety )

    Enjoy it more.

Dont get upset about others 'advice'

do you really want to bother when they're just putting down your entire way of parenting?

Enjoy every moment, even the ones which test your patience, because you will look back & laugh one day.

Stand up for yourself during the hospital stay - don't let the midwives pressure you into breastfeeding if it isn't right for you!

Take a few hours out for yourself each week, go get a facial, massage, hairdresser appointment, walk the dogs - whatever! You will relish the time away from the baby, but be appreciative of what you have & be missing him like crazy after a short while!

Nice thread idea! This is why I am so excited to have a second baby - because everything I learned with our first gets to be used again

As some of the PP's have said, don't worry about what bubs "should" be doing. They'll sort themselves out and you worrying won't help.

Don't get frustrated that other babies are doing what your baby won't - sleeping in the pram, having good day sleeps, self-settling, taking the bottle, etc. It won't help anything.

Don't buy all the fancy cots, prams, high chairs etc, as they all get worn our and dirty anyway, and you spend more money than you need to!

When the baby is asleep, go to sleep as well or at least just relax instead of rushing around cleaning.
I know your belly looks like a giant bowl of jelly but it will firm and flatten up soon enough so stop worrying about it.
Don't be so stressed about when or where the baby sleeps or creating 'bad habits' etc, just go with the flow.

This^ don't buy a thing until baby is born! We spent thousands on the best cot, the best change table, a cradle, a pram I did no research on (sold now) anyway spent wayyyy to much and have not used any of it at all. I have a room FULL of baby stuff including clothes that have not been touched
