Natalie and Richard have just enrolled their baby, Eleni (nine months), in our centre. They felt that a more consistent environment would benefit Eleni and it would also help Natalie to manage her return to work as she finds it difficult to juggle between the grandparents when they have other commitments. They would like to start Eleni in care soon but have also indicated that the grandparents and neighbour are willing to keep on helping out until Eleni settles in. So it has been decided that Eleni will commence care in about two weeks.
As first time parents and users of child care, they are concerned about how Eleni will settle into care, how the caregivers will know what she needs—if the staff will know when she is tired or hungry or just in need of a cuddle, what will happen if she is upset or hurt, and if the staff will have time to attend to Eleni as an individual when there are nine other children in the room.
We have to assure the parents and also take care of Eleni’s emotional and physical needs. You can use the information from Eleni’s enrolment form to help you work out the tasks and action plans that need to be developed to ensure that we have happy parents and take good care of Eleni.

Task 1: Social and emotional needs of babies
Thinking about Eleni and her parents has made me think that we should do more work on how we meet the emotional needs of infants. So could you prepare a one to two page article for the centre newsletter about how carers meet the emotional and social needs of infants aged between 6 and 12 months while they are in care. In the article you should describe:
the social and emotional characteristics of infants in everyday language that parents such as Richard and Natalie will understand.
Strategies and practices used to foster infant’s emotional wellbeing
