Default Good age to get a puppy?

I have a 3 years old ds and we are keen to get a puppy to add to our family and have found a gorgeous lab. We are a bit worried that maybe ds is a bit young though as sometimes he can be a bit funny with dogs. Anyone got any experience to help us?

There is no 'right' age to get a puppy or dog, it's purely individually dependent.

I know teenagers that I wouldn't trust with a stuffed teddy bear, but my almost six year old has trained two Giant breeds from puppyhood to their Titles.

Main things to think about when adding a dog.

    * Remember that your kid and your dog are not going to be like an old Lassie movie. Dogs, especially puppies, are not toys or siblings. They are animals that are potentially very dangerous and very lethal. Dog maulings happen because of a lack of information.

    * Remember that dogs cost money and time. If you buy a pup, you will need to take the time and effort not only to house train it, but also to socialise and obedience train it. Every day, for at least 15 minutes. It won't be a safe or worthwhile addition to the family if it's simply put in a yard from 8 weeks old and expected to magically be lead, house and boredom trained.

    * You said you're looking at a lab. Labradors are sporting breeds. They need strict diets with no free feeding of dry food, and plenty of exercise. Otherwise, they become obese, diabetic, bored and destructive.

    * Always always buy from a registered breeder. Preferably one that has children as well. Always ask about hip and elbow screening.
Here's a list of good breeders in your state: http://www.dogzonline.com.au/breeds/...e=SA&Submit=Go

    * What is "a bit funny"? Is it clinging to your legs and screaming hysterically in fear? Is it grabbing, hitting, kicking, yelling at? Is it that he won't leave a dog alone; follows it around and plays too roughly?
If any of those, I strongly recommend waiting at least another two years. Some kids simply are not mature enough to understand how to treat animals; but eventually grow into the knowledge.

    * Dogs live up to 20 years, for well bred individuals and certain breeds. Are you able to commit for that long?

If you're at all unsure, start with something smaller. A pair of rabbits, guinea pigs, fish, a bird like a handreared Eclectus, budgie or a Quaker. Not as interesting but better as a starter pet for unsure children.
