I think Sassy's just trying to ensure that we don't end up with mental health patients slipping through the system, that those who are suicidal only because they suffer a treatable mental illness don't go without appropriate care.

I don't class animals in the same category as humans. I have no qualms with killing animals as long as its done humanely and obviously not just for the sick enjoyment of doing it.

I don't think withdrawing life support is the same

but they both have a terminal illness so you treat the mental illness and then if they still want to be euthanased (sp?) its ok..?

Had a hysterectomy, bone marrow transplant, lost her bowel, was blind from the tumor pressing on her optic nerve... She spent more than half her life in and out of hospital, missing her kid's lives because she was too ill to go to soccer on saturday, couldn't go to the shops as it was compromising to her immune system. She asked her daughter to help her die and she did. She She even wrote and signed a letter stating she'd asked her daughter to help her end her life, but she was charged with murder nonetheless.

And yet, I don't see that as murder? I'd do the same if my mum asked me in a similar circumstance to that.
That is the most depressing thing I have heard all day. Your poor friend! Your poor friends mum, no way did she deserve to go to jail.

Yes, that is how I read it too. A mental illness does not always equal a terminal illness. There is still a possibility of treatment for a mental illness. A terminal illness means that there isn't really much more they can do. I think there is a big difference there.
