Default If you are a SAHM, and do study by distance, how many hours do you do? Or subjects

I have till next friday to enrol in the course I want to do, but I have 4 kids, one at kindy the rest home with me. And I'm just not sure I can handle it.
I am thinking of just doing one subject to start (so around 10 hours a week). How many hours do you do? Do you find it difficult?

I would start with one subject! At least you can get a feel for what it's like; workload etc. you can always pick up a heavier work load later on. Honestly, I have 3 kids; 5, 2 and 1. The 5 year olds at prep, and my two little ones go to kindy 2 days a week. I'm doing a preparation program through a uni via distance full time. It hasn't been too bad, but I know that will change once I'm doing Bach nursing: which starts end of oct and as its a summer semester I plan on only doing one subject that first semester. It's not impossible but it would be good, IMO, to start off slow to get a feel for it. Good luck

Hi beebs this is what I have just done. I start Monday. I am doing one unit which is 12 hours per week. Starting off real slow but BIG difference I only have 1 bub. Good luck with it I tell you it feels good going back to study and I haven't even started yet. I have felt so mind numb lately. You can only give it a shot. Just put away an hour a day?

I have been studying a diploma of community service from home for close to two years now. I have two kids. One at kindy one at home. I normally ask my close friends with kids to watch the kids or I lock myself away when dp is home. It's quite hard to study when kids are home I have found. I'm nearly finished now and have put them in daycare a day a week so I can get finished.

let's start at the very beginning.. it's a very good place to start

The kids are generally good at going to bed by 7, so I can do some then = problem being of course that I am exhausted by 7- haha!

But Loco - I am the same - my brain is numb from conversing with toddlers all day! And just the thought of enrolling is giving me a thrill!!

i am studying bachelor of psychology and I do one subject per semester via distance. With one i did two subjects, but with two under two I struggle with one subject.

I find my brain is best in the morning - i have a saying in the morning "this is as good as it is going to get" so i try to do all the thinking stuff in the morning and day.

Even though I have the time at night, my brain has retired for the day.

I try to do little bits during the day in between nappies, feeding, playing and surviving .

Basically, the kids come first and whatever i have left over is for studying - so whenever i can sit down for a bit i open the lap top and have a bit of a go at it.

Can I ask which uni that is? I'd like to do some further psychology training but can't find any uni's that would allow me to do one subject at a time via distance. I'm currently doing an online course but it's not recognised by the Australian psychological board.

Hi, this is my first post on bubhub. I am a SAHM to two (3yr and 18month) and studying Law. I started this degree before the babies came and over the years have discovered the following:
Don't wait for big blocks of time to be available - try to do something even if you can only grab fifteen minutes a few times a day. It all adds up and will make you feel more prepared when you can sit down for several hours.
If you can possibly afford it, buy an iPad. I know it is a big expense for many SAHM but it is a terrific study tool for long distance when you have kids- portable and discreet and easy to sit up in bed and go through readings etc...
Don't read novels. Especially the Larsson trilogy or The Hunger Games. They are too good and you will spend your precious study time reading page after page after page...

One subject is a great idea to ease into it. Best of luck, I think that you could surprise yourself with how well you do.
    Cheerio!
