There's a Family Guy episode with something about purity balls...
from what I remember, Peter wants his daughter to go with him and pledge her virginity to him & she refuses. He's then horrified when his son pledges his virginity to him.

Thought it was both horribly realistic and great social commentary :P

No, it's not a gift, and I try to avoid placing any value on whether somebody has slept with 100 people or none.

It is obviously something valued by society though. I read an article in the sydney morning herald recently that said that a brothel was advertising one of their clients as a virgin, which would attract a premium price.

My virginity was valued (and 'rated important') by me and given away in a then- committed relationship. I'm glad that I didn't have sex at high school or cave to pressure from earlier boyfriends to DTD. I hope my DD holds similar values and pride in herself not to engage in adult activities with young teenage boys (or older men whilst she is still maturing either I should say!). I don't care if people were more promiscuous than myself, but I still value my virginity when it existed and 'gifted it' yes.

I disagree - it the start of a whole new journey into adulthood and the greatness of sex - so unless you are saying she wont like sex going froward, I doubt she'll be disappointed.

This is the issue I have - I know at least 20ppl both male and female who 'saved' themselves for marriage - most recently 2 ppl who had decided to not even kiss until after they were married. And for each of these ppl cool, if thats what you want to do.

But I do know that each and every one of those girls AND GUYS had made covenenants with their churches/family to obstain from s3x until marraige. Some did charity balls, others were given chasity rings etc.

For each of them though made those convenenant (in the name of their religion) to their PARENTS. And at the wedding the PARENTS passed on that purity to the spouse.

This is what I don't like - the possesion of someone virginity by someelse.

I made the choice to not have s3x until I was engaged and I wouldn't change it for the world. Admittedly I was engaged at 19 and married at 20.
I didn't see it as a gift or even from a terribly religious perspective, I guess for me it was more of a test for him. If he was willing to wait until I was ready and he had made a commitment then clearly I meant something more to him than just sex.
I think it allowed us to establish a better non-sexual relationship which I think has helped us no-end with our IVF journey.

Apparently, you just put a sponge soaked with what looks like blood up there and hey presto! A virgin for you fine sir!
