Default I have a cold and feel crap....what can I take while breastfeeding?

    Hi Ladies,

Need some advise....I feel like poo as I have a cold. My nose is completely stuffed so I have to breathe through my mouth and my nose is runny and I am coughing and joints are all achey. I have been taking panadol to help with the aches and have tried Vicks Vaporub but that isnt working.

Is there anything else I can take or do I just need to suck it up for a week or two?

You can take nurofen. I think some of the cough medicines are ok (especially the chest cough ones), you would have to check at the pharmacy. A saline nasal spray?
You don't want anything with phenylephrine or psueodephedrine in it as it can dry up your milk.
But pretty much you might need to suck it up a bit, most of the cold and flu medicines don't help all that much anyway.

Can I ask a dumb question? Are you pregnant??
I have a cold too... Congested and all that. I just talked to my doctor because I'm pregnant and she said I can't take anything except panadol. Vicks is fine or steam inhale. (I put some some Vicks in sink with boiling water and breathe it in with a towel over my head!!). Vicks vapodrops okay too. But no to nurofen or any cold and flu medications.
if you're not preggers... Take whatever you need! I find the chemist version of codral is really good.

You can use nasal decongestants from the chemist. They are brilliant, dry a stuffed nose up completely (although they leave me with no sense of smell at all which is a bizarre sensation!). They only act upon the area you spray, ie your nose, and don't dry up milk. However you can only use them for a few days or you can damage the vessels in your nose. I find Butter Menthols are surprisingly effective too!

    Ask your chemist
